I have asked myself many times, "what is drawing and what is its purpose." Having been initially trained as a realist artist idrawing was a matter of interpreting the world as it appears to be, and drawing was a preparatory step. As my work began to move toward abstraction, the question once agqain akppeared; "what is drawing for me now?"
The issues now is to search and discover the essential use, understanding and function of marks and mark making. The purpose of this pursuit is to create compositions that in form and content are independent of visual observational images.. The transformation of marks into pictorial content and language allows the gathering, shifting and thoughtful choice of information that transcends limitation of material and motives invention. Drawing for me is no longer preparatory, but is it own statement.
